Same Day Dentures
Same Day Dentures
What Are Same Day Dentures?
Like traditional dentures, the purpose of same day dentures is to provide teeth where there are none. The main difference, though, is that traditional dentures often require weeks of waiting whereas same day dentures are provided the same day as tooth extraction and can be worn immediately. Another big difference is that same day dentures are sometimes meant to be temporary and are only worn until your mouth heals from any tooth loss or extraction and while your more permanent false teeth are created.
Are Same Day Dentures Right For Me?
Same day dentures are not right for every patient. We will ask you about your medical and dental histories as well as any prescription or over-the-counter medications you take. Same day dentures may not be appropriate for those with poor overall health or with certain dental conditions so please be sure to be open and honest with us about your health.
Typically, molds or impressions of your mouth are made prior to extraction and are then used to create your same day dentures. Dentures can be shaped and color-matched to replicate the tooth or teeth being replaced. Once they are ready, we will schedule your same day extraction and denture procedure.
As with everything in life, same-day dentures come with advantages and disadvantages. One benefit of getting your teeth extracted and replacement teeth all in one day is that you will not have to be without visible teeth, helping with any confidence issues. They also eliminate the need to learn to speak, eat, and otherwise live without teeth, only to have to relearn to do those things again once traditional dentures are ready. Additionally, there typically aren’t any dietary restrictions with same day dentures as there may be with the traditional kind. Also, dentures can help protect your gums from bleeding, damage, or infection after tooth extraction.
Same day dentures come with some downsides as well. First, same day dentures can cost a bit more than traditional dentures. They also sometimes require multiple adjustments, and therefore visits to our office, as the gums heal to ensure proper fit and to maximize comfort.
Because jawbone loss and receding gums will occur after tooth extraction, ideal same day denture candidates understand the importance of long-term oral health care and are committed to caring for their false teeth properly as well as to attend regular dental examinations and checkups.
