What is Gum Disease?
Lincoln, CA

A woman smiling after receiving treatment for gum disease at Lincoln Smiles in Lincoln, CAGum disease is a common dental disorder that we can help a patient gain control of, and maintain. Working with Dr. Eloisa Espiritu and Dr. Michael Joesting, we can remove the bacterial infection that is damaging your gums, improving the health of your teeth, and even your overall health. Our team at Lincoln Smiles can give you the pink healthy gums that your teeth require to give them the support they need.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection of your gum tissue which supports your teeth. Our mouth is constantly exposed to food and drink particles and other bacteria filled particles in the air. These particles are filled with decay causing bacteria. Our mouths naturally create a substance known as plaque, which is a blend of saliva and whatever else is in our mouth. Plaque is clear or white in coloring and collects along the rim of our teeth. Plaque is a bacteria haven, which is not positive for us.

To maintain healthy gums, the patient needs to remove plaque at least twice a day through brushing and flossing. If it is not removed, the substance will dry and harden into what is known as tartar or calculus. Tartar is dangerous for your teeth, it is difficult to remove and will lead to a bacterial infection with your gums.

Do I have gum disease?

You may have gum disease and be unaware of it, but there are signs that you can look for. Patients who have gum disease experience:
•  Gums that are sensitive or painful. The pain may not be severe, allowing patients to ignore the sensation.
•  Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing. Bleeding has become so common, that many patients have shared that they thought it was normal to experience small amounts of bleeding while brushing or flossing. It is not normal, it is a sign of irritation.
•  Gums that are no longer pink, but red and irritated. Infected gums are often puffy, red, and seem agitated.
•  Patients with gum disease may notice a negative smell or taste. A frequent complaint of patients with gum disease is halitosis or a sickly taste.
•  Patients with chronic periodontitis, which is a severe condition of gum disease may notice their teeth feel loose, shift, or even fall out.

You want to protect the tissues that support and surround your teeth. We can help.

Gum Disease Therapy

Our dentists, Dr. Eloisa Espiritu and Dr. Michael Joesting want to help remove the infection and strengthen your gums. The process may be as simple as a dental cleaning, or may require additional steps including a deep cleaning through scaling and root planing. Scaling is the removal of infected material, we will first use a tool that sprays oxygenated bubbles to remove tartar and calculus from your teeth and below the gums. We will then hand scale, with a specialized tool to ensure that all bacteria filled material is gone. We will then take the step to root plan, which is the smoothing of the patient’s roots, helping the roots to not collect bacteria as easily.

Some patients may require more frequent dental cleaning appointments and more frequent dental examinations.

We are here to evaluate the status of your gums and teeth, and then restore your gums and teeth to health if needed. For more information, contact Dr. Eloisa Espiritu or Dr. Michael Joesting at Lincoln Smiles by contacting our front office at: 916-543-8800.
