Invisalign® vs. Braces
One of the latest orthodontic treatments that we offer at Lincoln Smiles is Invisalign®. In recent years, this dental innovation has helped make the straightening of misaligned teeth more discreet and highly effective. Metal braces have been for the longest time the standard treatment for crooked teeth. This solution, however, discouraged people, particularly those of older age, because of the obvious interference in appearance and use of teeth.
Also referred to as clear aligners, Invisalign trays are often misconstrued as an expensive and ineffective option as compared to traditional metal braces. Let us look at some facts about aligners that may make them the solution you need.
Invisalign vs Traditional Braces
In terms of price, Invisalign may be slightly ahead of metal braces. This additional cost is however often acceptable to patients because of the better benefits it offers to users. Because the aligners are made of a clear material, it is easy to keep the application of this solution private.
As the treatment works by the patient being provided with gradually altered aligners that are switched out about every two weeks, the cost will largely depend on the number of trays that need to be provided. With more severe misalignment of the teeth that can be treated with Invisalign, the longer correction will likely take and therefore be more expensive.
How strictly the patient adheres to the use of the aligners will also matter. Ensuring that the trays are in for the minimum 22 hours a day takes good discipline and should keep progress at the expected pace.
Another benefit over metal braces is that eating, drinking, and cleaning of teeth are made easier. Food often becomes stuck, toothbrushes are damaged faster, and flossing becomes almost impossible with metal braces. With Invisalign, the trays can be taken out when eating, drinking, and cleaning, ensuring greater convenience and easier maintenance of oral hygiene.
How It Works
It is important to note that Invisalign is not a solution to all misalignments. It generally only works on mild to moderate cases, with treatments lasting anywhere between 10-24 months. This treatment works by first having an assessment done by one of our dentists. If you do qualify for its use, you will be fitted for several trays that will gradually shift each tooth into its correct position.
The trays are made of clear plastic or acrylic that tightly fits over the teeth. The series of trays are designed to slowly correct your bite discreetly and painlessly. Every couple of weeks or so, you switch over to the next tray in the set, as your teeth should have conformed to the earlier arrangement.
For those who have previously had orthodontic correction but are experiencing a slight shift, Invisalign treatment can be a good option, whose use can last as little as 3 months. This is an ideal choice as they can keep their treatment away from the notice of colleagues and family. Adults can more confidently enjoy their professional and social interactions without worrying about their looks.
