Having gaps between your teeth can have a negative impact on your speech, bite, and confidence. At Lincoln Smiles, experienced dental professionals will examine your condition and recommend the best treatment for you.

What is a Bridge?

Dental Bridges are essentially a section of artificial teeth that have a crown on both the ends. The crown covers your natural teeth in order to keep the replacement teeth in place. Here are three common types of dental bridges:
•  Traditional: These are made of metal, porcelain, or ceramics.
•  Cantilever: These are used when only one neighboring tooth is present instead of two.
•  Resin bonded: They typically consist of porcelain attached to metal, or plastic bits fused to a porcelain and metal foundation

What are Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are made of either plastic, or a combination of plastic and metal. To create partial dentures, artificial teeth are fixed to a pink-colored plastic base

They may have a metal framework to connect the teeth, or consist of other, more natural looking connectors. Partial dentures are a good option when a natural tooth or two still remain attached to the upper or lower jaw.

Pros and Cons of Dental Bridges

A dental bridge uses two crowns to hold the replacement teeth in their position. They are known as bridges because the artificial teeth “bridge” the gap where your teeth are missing.

Pros of Dental Bridges

•  Secure hold: The crowns that are used to fix the bridge to your teeth are strong and make sure that the dental appliance does not move from its place.
•  Do not require to be moved: Bridges are convenient as they do not need to be removed, unlike partial dentures.
•  Natural look: Bridges are mostly made of porcelain, which makes them look and feel similar to your natural tooth enamel.

Cons of Dental Bridges

•  Removal of natural enamel: Two healthy teeth need to be shaved in order to fix a bridge in place. This makes your teeth weak if the bridge ever has to be removed.
•  Difficult to clean: Specific tools and techniques are required to clean bridges.
•  Expensive: Bridges generally cost more than partial dentures, and are almost as expensive as dental implants.

Pros and Cons of Partial Dentures

Partial or removable dentures consist of a metal or plastic framework to hold the replacement teeth in place. The dentures attach to the remaining original teeth to fill in the gaps.

Pros of Partial Dentures

•  Non-invasive: In order to wear partial dentures, no oral surgery is required and teeth do not require to be trimmed down either.
•  Affordable: Partial dentures are not as costly as other methods and are also generally covered by dental insurance.
•  Effective in replacing multiple teeth: Partial dentures can easily replace multiple teeth that are not adjacent to each other.

Cons of Partial Dentures

•  Not secure enough: Partial dentures can attach to your teeth, but move around as their grip is weaker as compared to bridges.
•  Hard to get accustomed to: It may take some time to get used to wearing partial dentures.
•  Require everyday cleaning: It is important to remove and clean your partial dentures every day, making them harder to maintain as compared to bridges.

Both bridges and partial dentures are effective appliances to treat tooth loss. They can fill in the empty tooth sockets to help you eat and speak normally. Partial dentures may be a better option if your missing teeth are not right next to each other, while bridges may provide a more hassle-free solution if you have teeth missing in a row.
