If you have one or more chipped teeth, you can experience issues with pain (the sharp, jagged issues of a tooth may be felt during talking or eating), or the tooth may look unsightly. Never leave chipped teeth to go unattended, as they can negatively impact your appearance and overall dental health.
Taking Care of a Chipped Tooth Until We Can See You
If you notice that you have chipped your tooth, you need to take some self-care measures until we can see you to fix the tooth. To blunt any pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater rinse to lessen infection risk. If the chip is sharp or jagged, cover it with a piece of wax paraffin or sugarless chewing gum to protect your inside teeth and mouth.
Treating a Chipped Tooth
When you receive treatment for a chipped tooth, we will have to first assess the severity of the damage. If only a small part has been chipped, we usually can repair the tooth during a single visit. However, if the tooth is badly chipped, we may need to consider a more extensive procedure.
Types of Chipped Tooth Repairs
To fix a chipped tooth, we may bond a tooth with a tooth-colored resin material to give the tooth back its natural appearance. This is usually done for a front tooth. Otherwise, we may be able to repair the chip by placing a filling. If you have the tooth bonded, we usually do not need to use a numbing agent. We will start by etching the tooth surface with a specialized liquid or gel. Next, we will add an adhesive and the resin material. We then will shape the resin before curing it to make it look like a natural tooth. We may also add a dental veneer over a front chipped tooth or place a dental crown over a tooth that has been severely chipped.
As you can see, there is no specific treatment for fixing a chipped tooth. The procedure we use depends on the size of the chip and its location. If you have a chipped tooth or teeth, they should be fixed right away. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment for an exam.
