How Fevers Can Impact Your Oral Health

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Lincoln Smiles
How Fevers Can Impact Your Oral HealthA fever can adversely affect your dental health. The following information explains why.

Why a Fever Can Lead to Dental Problems

It is no secret. Cavities are one of the most widespread reasons for tooth damage and decay. If you get a fever when you are sick, your higher body temperature weakens the teeth and causes them to be more prone to bacterial attacks. The harmful oral bacterial reacts with the sugars in food and releases an acid that forms plaque on the teeth. What people do not realize is that plaque is exceptionally acidic. That is why, over time, the transparent and damaging film corrodes dental enamel and create holes in the teeth. Therefore, you need to be especially conscientious during a fever to rehydrate while following a regular dental routine.

How a Fever Can Impact Gum Health

A fever can also impact the health of the gums. Feeling feverish, in this case, can result from getting a sore throat or the flu. A fever, along with oral inflammation, often accompanies sinusitis as well. Because the gums become inflamed, they can also develop an infection. Again, you need to stick to your regular oral hygiene routine to address gum soreness, inflammation, and pain.

Taking Proactive Steps

Gargling with salt water also helps when you have a fever. This type of rinse will draw out the harmful bacteria that builds up whenever you feel sick. As noted, it is important to maintain a good dental routine – brushing twice daily and flossing at least once a day. Even if you are feeling poorly, you need to make brushing and flossing a daily habit. Drink room-temperature water to reduce your fever and rinse away the harmful bacteria. Run a fan at low speed for added comfort as well. Taking over-the-counter fever reducers, such as acetaminophen or aspirin, will also help you heal faster and support your oral health.

If you have been sick recently and have not had a checkup in a while, give us a call to schedule a cleaning and an exam.
