Denture Care

Lincoln, CA

Many elderly people who experience tooth loss use dentures. Dentures are a safe, non-invasive, and effective replacement for your natural teeth. However, they require regular care so that they can last for years.

At Lincoln Smiles, Dr. Eloisa Espiritu and Dr. Michael Joesting can guide you on how to take care of your dentures.

How Should You Clean Your Dentures

Dentures are delicate devices that can become damaged if you do not take care of them. It is important that you take note of the following tips when cleaning your dentures:

Remove and Wash Off your Dentures After Every Meal
Stand on a towel or over a basin of water so that if your dentures slip when removing, they won’t break. Run cool or lukewarm water over the dentures to remove food particles from the device.

Handle the Dentures Carefully
Do not try to bend your dentures. Dentures are precise and delicate devices and can easily crack or lose their form if you exert too much force on them.

Brush Your Mouth Diligently
Just because you do not have teeth, does not mean you can get away without brushing. Use a soft-bristled brush to clean your gums, inner cheeks, palate, and tongue. If you use denture adhesive, make sure to remove it. This way bacteria won’t be able to cause gum disease.

Brush Your Dentures Every Day
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to gently clean your dentures. If you are using a denture cleanser, make sure it does not contain any harsh chemicals that could damage it.

Soak Your Dentures Every Night
Dentures are made of acrylic which can dry out if you leave them out. Make sure to soak your dentures in water or a mild soaking solution overnight. Follow our advice on how to take good care of your dentures.

Rinse Your Dentures Before Putting Them Back In
Rinse your dentures with water before putting them back into your mouth. This is particularly important if you soaked them in a denture solution. This solution contains chemicals that can be harmful to human tissue and can cause burn sores and nausea.

Schedule Routine Dental Checkups
We will recommend how often you need to have your routine dental checkups. During checkups, we will examine your dentures and have them professionally cleaned so they remain white. We will also determine if your dentures fit well or if it needs to be rebased or relined.

Don’ts Of Denture Care

There are some things you need to be careful about when caring for your dentures:
• Never wash your dentures with hot water as it can warp their shape.
• Avoid using harsh chemicals to clean your dentures as they can damage your dentures.
• Do not use any bleaching products on your denture as they can weaken them.
• Whitening toothpaste cannot whiten the color of your dentures.
• Do not use sharp objects like toothpicks to clean your dentures as they can slip and damage your mouth.

It is important that you take good care of your dentures so they remain pliable and free of bacterial contamination.
